Riding Lessons
Come join our exceptional riding lesson and training program!

Mahogany Bay Farm offers a comprehensive lesson program for adults and children of all ages and riding abilities on our horses or yours. We specialize in hunters and hunter seat equitation and focus on instilling an effective yet elegant riding position on the flat and over fences. Our lesson program curriculum focuses on rider position and control of the horse, use of aids, and progressive and challenging flatwork exercises as the foundation for correct and effective riding over fences. Poles and small x-rails are then  introduced to strengthen the rider's base of support and help stabilize their arm and hand position while jumping.  Learning to monitor their horse's pace and developing eye control to effectively ride a predetermined course is practiced.  The curriculum then continues with advanced flatwork  and dressage movements that are required in the big equitation classes. Jumping exercises with poles, gymnastics, and courses of varying heights and difficulty are intertwined as well to keep lessons enriching and fun.  We also focus on proper horsemanship so riders learn to take care of their horse and tack before and after riding. This comprehensive program creates responsible, confident, and knowledgeable equestrians. We strive to offer a fun, educational, and relaxed atmosphere while helping our riders achieve their equestrian goals. Whether you just want to enhance your skills as a rider, or you want to compete at horse shows, we welcome you to join us as a great place to meet friendly people who share your passion for horses!

Meet the Owner & Trainer:
Erin Sheffer, M.Ed has had a lifelong passion for horses! She has over 15 years of riding, training, and teaching experience. Erin spent her youth riding young and green horses, mostly off-the-track Thoroughbreds, and having fun competing at horse shows in the hunter and equitation divisions. While receiving her Bachelor's degree in Business and her Master's degree in Education, she worked for several hunter/jumper, dressage, and eventing barns doing everything from mucking stalls to training horses to teaching. She also volunteered at a 24 hour emergency equine veterinarian clinic to solidify her education in horse care and stable management. Erin has realized that teaching is her other passion, either in the classroom teaching business and computer classes to 6th-12th graders, or in the ring! Erin is a firm believer in lifelong learning and continues her riding and training education by attending clinics, workshops, and seminars with top trainers each year.  Erin has been mentored by five time Olympian show jumper, Anne Kursinski, international Grand Prix dressage trainer and Olympic alternate, Jane Savoie, and Grand Prix dressage trainer and international natural horsemanship clinician, Karen Rohlf.  Erin strives for a relaxed family atmosphere where lessons are not centered around the pressures of competitions, but rather focused on achieving the students individual goals and needs while learning proper horsemanship. Whether your interest lies in riding for pleasure, competing at horse shows, or somewhere in between, Erin creates personalized riding and training programs to suit every horse and rider. She is qualified, experienced, and knowledgeable and loves explaining riding theory, the how and why of riding, to her students!
